NYU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Master Communicator & Motivator
It’s been 2 decades since I’ve seen or spoken to Coach Nelson. He took some time out of his busy recruiting and pre-season schedule to talk to the Rant about his amazing journey in coaching that started with coaching a JV team on Long Island, his travels, his mentors that helped him along the way, and what he sees for NYU this season and beyond. All that
and more, my conversation with Coach Nelson, now.
“It’s amazing what can be accomplished when
no one cares who gets the credit.”
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstance, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a team..a family…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.”
“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows
common people to attain uncommon results.”
– Andrew Carnegie
