This may be so zeitgeist, me-in-the-moment, where I’m thinking that nothing really matters. I know for damn sure that officiating is so far in my mind, even though we proudly run, and will continue to run, Referee Rant. We are in a holding pattern; we are a
vaccine away from being unheld.
I’ve seen every TV Show there is.
I’ve seen Tiger King twice.
I’ve seen another documentary, McMillions, twice.
I’ve read 4 books.
I’ve took 2 classes.
I’ve been bored.
I’ve been motivated.
I’ve written right handed; left handed.
Written until I’ve had none left.
Some people long for sports, I’m one of them. I saw something disturbing on CNN, where it said that there may not be sporting events in Los Angeles and New York until – 2021. I can’t really say that I’m surprised – It just looks just as jarring as everything else that’s happening. to see it as a passing ticker. Ugh. It makes sense. Our first priority as a town, as a city, as a state, as a country, as a continent, and as a world isn’t to have a sporting event – as much as it would be the most comforting thing to be hold for most of us at this time.
Again, it makes sense – imagine if your watching a ball game in September at Chevez Ravine, with thousands of people, just so happy that we outside, the dream after quarantine; or Yankee Stadium, to see those Pinstripes from the stands. What would taste worse than Ovaltine is another spread. It would take us back to where we already are, now. I know nobody got TIME FOR THAT.
“I had every V12 engine;
Wish I could take it back to the beginning.” – Jay-Z
April is a particular time in New York that I surely look forward; not so much the reffing aspect; the changes in scenery, of being behind the plate, or running around the field – it’s more of a barren-yet-bergeoning tree, with pink petals, with dandelions flying, pollinating, waiting for human interaction, sneezing into allergy season. That for damn sure ain’t happening, and I can’t even tell you if that’s happening a year from today.
I know my officiating friends, no, all my friends are as President Trump would say, ” raring to go”; to go outside, to proceed with our normal activities to how it once was. As much as I wish it was back to how it was, it’s been so long of remembering what that was, is.
“We are not meant to be happy all the time. We are meant to experience every emotion fully and deeply and embrace both pleasure and pain so we can truly grow. Think about it…Sunshine all the time makes a desert.” – Instagram Story
I remember the first night the NBA cancelled. That was the first moment that I knew things were serious. For awhile, at least in my lifetime, it seemed as the most progressive league out of the major sports in the United States, and if it shut down it season, then you know it was the real deal. That seemed like many moons ago (probably 2 moons in real time). Since then, the first day it was gone, everything else has followed suit, and everything began as it ended, with no end in sight, everyday. Groundhog Day.
“It’s the same thing everyday; clean up your room, stand up straight, pick up your feet, take it like a man, be nice to your sister, dont’ mix beer and wine ever, Oh yea, don’t drive on the railroad tracks.” – Phil Connors
I don’t know if it was day 23 or 24, I looked into the mirror, and reflected on what we all have been through. First responders, last responders and everyone stuck in between. As much as we wan’t go back in time, the present is real. As much as we hope for what we want to be, this is what it is. I came to an acceptance with our plight, and flipped it.
“Understanding is the first step acceptance, and only
with acceptance can there be recovery.” – J.K. Rowling
As much as we can’t do what we can do, we can accept it, and start to reverse this time when we are stuck. We don’t have to be, perhaps we are stuck in our own mind. I for one, am still engaged, and will always be to make this site, to push it forward, to look at it as an opporutnity to challenge myself in still making something out of nothing – making out of content with virtually no sport.
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally
forward in whatever way they like” – Lao Tzu
I have not longed to officiate – there will come a time, and place, for it be back. Today is not that day; neither is tomorrow – maybe not even in half a year. I’ve accepted that. It’s time to use this time wisely. Make this useful to be the best you you can be.

– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
