Super shouts go to Terrence & Kyle, for letting Referee Rant be part of this amazing event. The essence of Basketball, especially in my formative years, was, is, and always be 3 on 3 basketball. Half court, even more so then full, is where I honed my own skills in shooting, perfected my craft in passing, and memories in playing with
my best friends that I will never forget it.
WAFA is an acronym aptly long form known as We Are From Anywhere – which showed the diversity of the participation of the players, the diversity of sponsors of the event, including Referee Rant, and the inclusion of everyone as we all have the same love for the beautiful sport that is Basketball. Set at Connetquot High School, in Suffolk County, some of the best photographers and videographers showed up to commemorate the event, including Referee Rant’s very own Christian Rios.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase,
just the first step.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
In it’s second year, we missed the first one. We have a good excuse though, we weren’t in existence. But we were happy to be part of that second year, and in perpetuity for every year it happens.
In terms of officiating, hopefully next year, we can get more certified officials to represent Referee Rant, to fortify what will be a long term, withstanding relationship. In terms of the gameplay, competition was hot, and heavy. Especially towards the latter rounds, everyone wanted to win. Often times, I’d let players ride out through contact, only calling a foul if a player gets displaced, or the ball becomes loose. There were no free throws being shot, so fouls were only for the other teams not to score.

It’s a unique way to ref, as the fouls were unlimited for all players. We look forward to growing with WAFA! To another successful year!
